Question of the Day: Can Age really be a Problem in a Relationship
Age differences in relationships have caused many love relationships to end even before they could start.
For many men and women but especially women, the age gap between them and someone they wish to date or marry matters to them a lot.
And while age difference mostly bothers men in one way it bothers women in two different ways:
- When they are older than a relationship or marriage prospect.
- When a relationship or marriage prospect is much older than they feel comfortable with.
For the men it's usually a question of:
Can they date or marry a lady older than them? It matters to them less if they're much older than a woman. In fact many men would prefer it that way.
Age Difference in Marriage
The tradition or what is expected is that a man be reasonably older than the woman he's dating or chooses to marry. And I guess that makes sense since a man is supposed to be the head of the woman it only seem reasonable that he be older. However some men and women have demonstrated that it doesn't have to be. They believe love matters most in the success of a relationship than some numbers game. Some of these men have gone ahead to marry women older than them and women married men much younger than them. No matter how much the society frowns at it, it's a trend that has come to stay.
Some Couples with Age gap between them
There are many couples across the world with age gap between them, average citizens and celebrities; but especially celebrities. And the celebrities have been more daring in age gaps they settle for. Some even have over a decade age gap between them and their women, the men being the younger in the relationship.
Some Celebrity Men Who Married Older Women
Soul E and Ure Queen Okezie. Ure was 11 years older than Soul E. I'm not sure if they actually got married but they surely were in a relationship for sometime.
Peter Okoye of P-Square musical duo and Lola Omotayo. Lola is said to be 6 years older than Peter. Peter and his twin brother Paul was born 18 November 1981. Although as to Lola's date of birth, no one is saying. Lola and Peter are yet to be married they've had two children together, a son and a daughter. And they continue to maintain their relationship.
Update:
Lola Omotayo and Peter Okoye of Psquare are now married. Peter proposed to Lola with a Range Rover Envogue early August, 2013. They got married Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Ark Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. A wedding that was attended by many of the big names in Nigeria Entertainment industry.
Dare Art-Alade and his wife Deola Ayeni. Deola is 8 years older than Darey yet they've been married for over 5 years and so far had two children together.
Usher Raymond and Tameka Foster. Tameka is 8 years older than Usher. Yet they were once married and had two children together.
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey. Mariah is 11 years older than her husband Nick yet they've been married for some years now and the couple had a set of twin on their third year wedding anniversary.
So…
Does Age Differences in Relationships Affect the Success of the Relationships?
If I have to answer to that question right away I'll have to say Yes, a couples age difference can affect the success of their marriage and No it can't. That must sound confusing for you but if you keep reading I'll clarify that in a bit.
Yes it can affect the relationship if both parties are not comfortable about the age difference especially the man if he's younger; because then he's likely to over react to everything the woman says or does easily taking it as a sign of disrespect something he probably wouldn't have read any meaning to if it was coming from someone he was older than.
For example he could take it as being disrespected because he's younger even when the woman was only trying to make a joke about something. And also because he's younger he may always try to do things to prove he's head in this house which could be too much to handle by the woman. And you can't fault him because in the society we find ourselves men who marry older women are always under pressure to prove that despite they are younger they are the head in their household.
And for the relationship of older women who are married to younger men to work, the woman must be willing to be extra submissive so that she is not always misunderstood as being disrespectful to her husband because he's younger. So she has to be twice as humble and ready to give her partner the respect he deserves. And usually this is hard to do especially when these women are well to do in the society and worst if they are richer than their mate. It's never easy to make a relationship work when the woman is richer and more influential than the husband and this is true even in the traditional age gap relationships. Men in such relationships are quick to feel inferior and neglected.
So these age gap relationships have more challenges to cope with.
And No, it won't affect the success of such relationships because it's like any other relationship; for it to work both parties have to put equal amount of effort. And if an age gap relationship doesn't work out it's not necessarily because of the age difference in the relationship; though it's easier to conclude that way.
For example Usher's marriage to Tameka ended because of issues of infidelity. And that's something common with many relationships especially celebrities relationships.
Darey Art Alade's marriage with Deola and that of Nick Cannon to Mariah are some of the best examples that age gap doesn't have to matter in a marriage. These couples are having the best times of their lives together. Proof that couples can still have successful marriages even with many years between them.
Dear readers this is an issue in our society today and I really want to know what you think about it.As a guy can you date a girl older than you? And for the ladies can you date a guy younger than you?.

UP BLUES.......
An extraordinary Barclays Premier League encounter, including five goals in a frantic 10-minute period in the second half, ended with the Blues running out 6-3 winners on Merseyside.
The tone was set with two Chelsea goals inside the first three minutes, composed finishes from Diego Costa and Branislav Ivanovic.
Kevin Mirallas struck back for the hosts just before half-time but an own goal from Seamus Coleman restored our two-goal advantage midway through the second half. Further goals were then traded: first Steven Naismith, then Nemanja Matic, before Samuel Eto'o made it 4-3 with almost his first touch for the Toffees.
Ramires hit back instantly and the points were sealed as the clock ticked over to 90 minutes courtesy of the brilliant Diego Costa.
Six goals is by two the most chealsea has scored at this ground, and the margin of victory matches our previous record victories at Goodison, 3-0 wins in 1908 and 1956.

Crime in China.......so sad
Beijing: A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to death in China for killing eight of his neighbours, including three children, following a dispute over the positioning of a mirror.
Li Lingtao was convicted by a local court in Pingdingshan City of central China's Henan Province for the murder of his neighbours using an iron bar, an axe and a cleaver in May this year.
Li surrendered to police after the crime, saying he was angry that his neighbours living opposite the street had put up a mirror on their gate.
He suspected they were trying to damage his feng shui, the ancient Chinese philosophical system under which geomantic omens are held to affect the fortunes of an abode.
During an open trial attended by nearly 100 people on Thursday, Li admitted to the court that he killed the people seeking revenge, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The Intermediate People's Court of Pingdingshan also deprived him of his political rights for life, the report said.
Nigerian lunches new e-identity card
Nigerian Identity Management Commission (NIMC) will issue MasterCard-branded identity cards with electronic payments functionality to 13 million Nigerians. This initiative is the largest rollout of a biometric-based verification card with an electronic payment solution in the country and the broadest financial inclusion program in Africa.
The eID card forms a key component of the Nigerian Identity Management System, deployed by NIMC as part of its mandate to create, maintain and operate the country’s first central National Identity Database and provide proof of identity to Nigerians 16 years and older.
With 13 applications, including MasterCard’s prepaid payment technology and Cryptovision’s biometric identification technology, the eID card will provide millions of Nigerians – the majority of whom have never had access to a banking product – with the security, convenience and reliability of electronic payments.
At a celebratory event held in Abuja, Goodluck Jonathan said: “I am happy that this important milestone of the rollout of the National Identity Management System has been realized today. I am impressed with the quality of the eID card and the work of the corporate partners that made it possible. I commend especially MasterCard, and Access Bank Plc, as well as the Commission [NIMC] for achieving a world-class product.”
He said the card builds a window to a social security benefit system and therefore, it is a card every Nigerian should get.
NIMC is working with several government agencies to integrate and harmonize all identity databases including the Driver’s License, Voter Registration, Health Insurance, Tax, SIM and the National Pension Commission (PENCOM) into a single, shared services platform.
“The National eID program enables us to create an optimized common platform for Nigerian citizens to easily interact with the various government agencies and to transact electronically,” says Barr. Chris ‘E Onyemenam, Director General and CEO of NIMC. “There are many use cases for the card, including the potential to use it as an international travel document, which will have significant implications for border control in Nigeria and West Africa.”
“In close collaboration with both the public and private sectors to achieve the full potential of this program, NIMC is focused on inclusive citizenship, more effective governance, and the creation of a cashless economy, all of which will stimulate economic growth, investment and trade,” he adds.
Through the collaborative efforts of NIMC (the project lead), MasterCard (payments technology provider), Unified Payment Services Limited (payments processor), Cryptovision (Public Key Infrastructure and Trust Services Provider), and pilot issuing banks including Access Bank Plc, 13 million Nigerians will gain access to state-of-art financial services as part of the pilot program.
“This is a memorable occasion for MasterCard as we witness the start of a financial inclusion program that is unprecedented in scale and scope,” says Daniel Monehin, Division President of Sub-Saharan Africa, MasterCard. “Combining an identity card with MasterCard’s prepaid payment capability creates a game changer as it breaks down one of the most significant barriers to financial inclusion – proof of identity – while simultaneously enabling Nigerians to access the global economy.”
He said the broader economic impact of the card will be felt as the previously unbanked and under-banked are able to gain access to the mainstream economy, and the visibility of their assets allows them to build a financial history and establish credit-worthiness with financial institutions.
Using the card as a payment tool, Nigerians can deposit funds, receive social benefits, save, or engage in many other financial transactions that are facilitated by electronic payments with the extra security assurance that biometric verification provides. They can also pay for goods and services and withdraw cash at millions of merchants and ATMS that accept MasterCard payment cards in Nigeria and in more than 210 countries and territories globally. MasterCard has unsurpassed merchant acceptance; no other brand is more widely accepted. The card also has the added safety and security benefits offered by the EMV Chip and Pin standard.
Group Managing Director, Access Bank Plc Herbert Wigwe, said: “Access Bank is a supporter and promoter of innovative ideas that would improve the quality of lives of Nigerians. This initiative provides another opportunity to highlight our commitment to national development and nation building.”
To receive the eID card, Nigerians aged 16 and above need to register at one of the hundreds of NIMC enrollment centers nationwide. The enrollment process involves the recording of an individual’s demographic data and biometric data (capture of 10 fingerprints, facial picture and Iris) to authenticate the cardholder and ensure that there are no duplicates on the system. Upon registration, NIMC issues each Nigerian with a unique National Identification Number (NIN), followed by the national eID card.

Who believes Nigerian billionaire never went to the university!!!!!
In her words: "I come from Ikorodu, Lagos state. I am married to a dashing young lawyer of 70 years of age and we have four grown up gentlemen and grandchildren. It has not been a rag to riches fairytale. It has not been an overnight phenomenon like some cases which you find here and there all over the world. For as long as I can remember, I had always wanted my own business. Hard work - am trying to tell you how I got to where I am if you want those billions - hard work, diligence, persistence... Days where I nearly gave up but I chose not to give up...
It would have been easy to compromise but I chose not to and I stayed focus. I could have stayed a secretary as my father desired according to his plan for me but I had bigger aspirations. I dreamt big. God strengthened me and gave me wisdom. I had a passion and burning desire to succeed. Being a secretary, a banker, a fashion icon, a cooperate promoter and printer, a real estate owner, an oil magnate, that I can assure you was no easy feat...
Firm belief that what is worth doing is what doing well or not doing at all. I took charge of my life with the tools I have shared with you. I chose to become born again at the age of 40. I chose to make a covenant with God that if he would bless me I would work for him all the days of my life.
I chose to hold on to the cross and look up to him every step of the way. Today additional accomplishment includes a wife of almost 40 years, a mother, grandmother, ministry, counseling, outreach, NGO Rose of Sharon Foundation for widows and Author, writer, author of several inspirational books. All I say to the glory of God.
So I am 63 and I am not yet done. So what is your excuse? I never went to a University and I am proud to say so because I don't think I have done too badly. You do not have to have a University education to be able to make it, so count yourselves privileged to have that education as part of the feather in your cap."
- Mrs Alakija said this to students of UNILAG during the 2014 UNInternational Youths Day in Lagos.
