4 Reasons Why Nigerian Women Should Start Proposing To Men (Funny)

proposing-to-a-man

Nigeria is a country full of traditions like many other countries around the world. It is almost a taboo for a woman to ask a man’s hand in marriage. Women generally have fantasies that someday a Mr. Right go down on his knees with a diamond encrusted ring to ask them for marriage.

But hey, we live in a world where change occurs over time and conventions are broken. Well times are changing yet again and with a deep sense of humor we look at five reasons why Nigerian women should start proposing to men.

1) Well, what a man can do a woman can do better

proposing-to-a-man

We all know the popular saying “what a man can do a woman can do better”? Feminism is the order of the day and women want equality badly. How about some equality in the area of marriage proposals. Huh?

Instead of waiting for the conventional marriage proposal of going on his knees to pop the question, you can take charge and save him the trouble.

2) Men are like babies, just pick one

men like to be pampered

Just like little boys who love to be adored by their mums, men want to be pampered by the women they are dating. Yes, you heard right men want to be treated like babies.

He wants all the massages, special attention, care and pampering as much as you do and he probably deserves it as well. Nothing stops a woman from taking the initiative to show how much she cares by giving him a ring.

One you’re sure he is the right baby for you, set for the right mood and things should go smoothly with your proposal. Hehe.

3) Time isn’t on a (Nigerian) woman’s side

biological clock

There’s so much pressure on young Nigerian women to get married. In fact, this leads many of them to picking the wrong man. There’s pressure from Mum and Dad, pressure from friends and pressure from extended family. The seemingly bad girls get married earlier than the good ones.

What should you do? Well, if you believe you have found with Mr. Right for some reason he isn’t flashing an engagement ring, you better pin him down sharp sharp.

4) Young lady, you’ve got serious competition

 Black-Women-Fighting

We all know things are getting tougher and more competitive in Nigeria. Back in the day, Nigerian men married at 25 now, guys are waiting till after 30 sometimes 35. The average man wants a car and a house before marriage. The cost of these packages means he’s got to wait longer. Even bride price has gone up due to inflation.

There are fewer men available for the increasing number of single searching ladies. If you’ve have one who is a bit comfortable and not too bad looking you better put a chain on his neck or like they say in Yoruba…cook him some nice vegetables.

Good luck with your proposal and please don’t take this post too seriously :)

KCee – ”Why I Flaunt My Wealth On Social Media”

In a recent interview, Limpopo Master, KCee speaks about his much talked about fashion style, flaunting his wealth on social media and his controversial marital status. Read excerpts below: “I made people talk about my fashion sense; I started it. The truth is that in this industry, when you are quiet and you want people to talk about you, one can do anything. I started talking about my fashion sense on Instagram and for those that know me and follow me, they would confirm that I am a fashion icon. Nigerians feel that when you call yourself a fashion icon, you are being proud and that is why they were criticising my style. Each time I create such controversy, I gain about 2000 new followers; so I keep doing it. On flaunting his wealth  I just like to express myself and that is why I flaunt what I have on social media, even the American celebrities do the same. If they buy new things or they are going anywhere, they put it on the social media. It is just a way of keeping the die-hard fans abreast of what we are doing. It is not a problem neither is it an issue but for those criticising it, I feel it is normal. No matter who you are on earth even if you are a pastor, people would criticise you. Even Christ was criticised, so who am I?” On his status as a married man “If I am married or not is for another day, not today. It is a discussion for another day. Anything you hear about the matter is for another day. The air has been cleared but it is an issue for another day,”

Popular Married Yoruba Actor Caught In Baby Mama Scandal

Popular actor and comedian, Olaniyi Afonja, better known as Sanyeri has a secret he’s keeping away from his wife, Awawu Omolara Jimoh and the world. He has a love-child from one of his longtime intern and girlfriend, Omotoyosi Jaiyesimi. Toyosi, a beautiful lady who has been shuttling as an intern in Sanyeri’ s drama group and fellow actor, Adekola Tijani also known as Kamilu Kampo put to bed a baby girl last month. The christening of the baby in Ikorodu, Lagos, according to reliable sources was low-key. Sanyeri was shell-shocked when he received the news that Toyosi was pregnant for him, though he knew the baby was coming since the lady had refused his plea for abortion. The fact that she had delivered the baby did not meet him as a surprise. Sanyeri’s baby’s mama is also an upcoming actress and Islamic singer whose career only recently began to blossom. Our checks also revealed that Sanyeri who has a soft spot for fair-skinned ladies found Toyosi too hard to resist, and so it didn’t come as a surprise to close friends that the relationship between the secret lovebirds grew from that of an intern- to-boss to a full-blown romantic affair. As expected both sides, who have according to E24-7 MAGAZINE have sworn to a secret oath make it a secret of a lifetime, as long as the baby’s and the mother’s needs are taken care of have denied the story. When E24-7 MAGAZINE contacted Sanyeri on phone, he went on a long pause, apparently ruffled, but later gathered himself together enough to deny the paternity of the child, also claimed that he has never set his eyes on the lady.Following repeated calls to his phone lines, one Sunday who identified himself as his Personal Assistant, Sanyeri eventually responded and made a plea to meet our correspondent to make some explanations but he was faraway. He asked: “Why did you want to write my scandal. You just want to write my scandal. When told that was not the intention but to seek the truth, he veered off discussion, whipping up sentiments and asked if Toyosi has owned up. He concluded: “Well, you can go ahead and write your story, I will not die. I will survive, there’s no problem,” he said. Speaking with E24-7 MAGAZINE, Omotoyosi also refuted the claim that Sanyeri was the father of her baby. In a voice, that betrayed her worries, Toyosi insisted that the father of her child wasn’t in the entertainment industry. When asked for the father of her baby, she said, “Sanyeri is not the father of my child. The father of my child is not in the entertainment industry.” When pressed further to divulge the real name of her baby’s father, she said, “What do you want me to say? Sanyeri is not the father of my child.”

TBlizz is not accountable for all my money...Reasons why Tiwa sacked her Husband

According to recent revelations, Tiwa Savage and her hubby/ex manager reportedly have issues but it has nothing to do with cheating/physical abuse. Teebillz has reportedly not been managing Tiwa’s finances professionally but has been dipping his hands into her funds and has not been accountable as regards the actual performance fees he receives on her behalf. As her husband /manager and also boss of her record label 323 entertainment,Tiwa left all negotiations to him. When he tells her he gets a certain amount she trusts him and does not bother to verify if it’s the exact amount he collected or not. A close source also sited an incident with Hiptv boss, Ayo Animashaun who had a deal with them to pay them N2m for the live coverage of their Dubai wedding. He paid Teebillz about N1.5m and Teebillz didn’t tell Tiwa he had collected the money. A while after the wedding, a furious Tiwa called Ayo, raising dust and raining insults on him for not paying them. Only after Ayo proved to her that he paid Teebillz did she believe him because she swore that she trusted her hubby and he couldn’t lie to her . She was embarrassed when she found out her husband had collected the money without her knowledge. It took the intervention of the current NFF chairman, to settle the issue and appease the aggrieved Hiptv Boss. This led to Tiwa finding out that he had been doing that regarding so many of her other shows. She was hurt and betrayed hence his replacement with another manager, Meccamillions. Tiwa trusted her hubby so much that she gave him her credit card all the time. There is no smoke without fire, there is indeed trouble between Tiwa and her hubby, but we hope it’s something the couple can both work out quickly. We believe Tiwa has taken the best step by replacing her hubby with a new manager. We also hope it does not have an adverse effect on the trust the couple once had for each other.
Check out Tiwa’s new manager below who already accompanies her to events.

Top 10 Hottest Nigerian Rappers For 2014

By all accounts it’s been a relatively quiet year for a lot of hip-hop acts in Nigeria. The likes of SDC, MI, Kahli Abdu, Terry Tha Rapman haven’t put out much of material this past year, and it’s left room for some of the new comers to really do their. Whether it’s a sign of things to come we’ll have to wait and see, but without too much long story let’s get into the top 10 hottest rappers in Nigeria based on released material in late 2013 into 2014. This is not a status ranking, but rather based on material put out in the past year; the quality (wordplay, skill, flow, delivery), the impact, and the overall reception across the board. Remember it’s hottest right now not best overall.

10.Yung6ix

After what seemed like an eternity, Yung6ix finally released his highly anticipated album, 6 O Clock, and from all accounts the album is a good project with a sizable number of hit tracks. Along with the hot album cuts Lights, Kpansh, Before I Go Broke and Kings, Yung6ix also released the single, Amen a little later to keep his hot buzz going. It’s been a commercially successful year for Yung6ix with the album release and many collabos, and you can only expect that it’ll get better from here. He’s still got some work to do lyrically but no doubt when it comes to hip-hop in Nigeria for 2014, he’s been one of the brighter spots overall.

9. Sinzu

Sinzu has been in the news this past year for other reasons besides his music. From his beef with Godwon to his alleged problems with the law, it’s easy to think Sinzu didn’t do much on the music side of the things. But when you go back and sample the tunes he’s dropped over the past year (Make I Tell You, Lord Knows, Fashi, OG Bobby Johnson) you’ll be quickly reminded that Sinzu is still indeed Sinzu. The most refreshing thing about Sinzu’s music recently is the realness of it. You get the feeling this is a guy doing his thing without the inhibitions of commercialism or record label restrictions. Dude is just doing his thing and it’s coming out pretty dope.

8. Ice Prince

Say what you will about Ice Prince but he’s been arguably one of the most consistent rap acts out of Nigeria for the past couple of years. He rarely shies away from features, and is consistently putting out new material for his fans. He might not be the best lyricist out there but he more than makes up for it with his hard work, and good musical sense. Along with the hit singles from his last year album release (Fire Of Zamani) which he put out videos for, Ice Prince has done well with singles, Can I Talk (ft. MI and Joel Ortiz), Tears For Naija, N-Word Remix and Freestyle. Not to count the numerous features he’s had. Simply put Ice Prince is stamping his name as one of the hip-hop cats from Nigeria we wont be forgetting soon.

 7. Vector

Vector went into somewhat of a hiatus for most of 2014, but when he came back he came back with a serious bang! Dropping his #A7 mixtape, he pretty much told us that while he was a bit quiet in the past months he wasn’t sleeping. The mixtape has gotten mostly positive reviews from fans and hip-hop heads alike. You have to wonder that if Vector was consistently putting out stuff all year he might be higher up this list cos we all know he’s hot on the MIC. The tunes from him bound to make some noise from his tape into 2015 are Shiga, Undefined. Tupac Bass and Celestial Body are tunes that will definitely creep into a lot of playlists based purely on the lyrical work on it. All in all Vector is pretty much a stable name in Nigerian Hip-Hop and this year he didn’t do anything to change that.

6.Reminisce

Earlier this year Reminisce was featured in TIME magazine’s “rappers around the world” video special, and for very good reason. He’s been on the hottest MCs in Nigeria over the past year, and his stock has been rising steadily since he first hit the scene almost 6-7 years ago. Reminisce’ sophomore album Alaga Ibele release late last year has carried him into 2014 with some serious momentum. Singles Daddy’, Eleniyan, Government gave fans a taste of how good Reminisce can be. But it didn’t stop with his album cuts; Reminisce put out a remix to Fela, a new single Tesojue, numerous videos, and one of favorite, a hot collabo with Sarz (Ise Yen). All in all, anyway you slice it, you can’t call any of the hottest names in hip-hop for this past year without mentioning Reminisce in it.

5. Boogey

When you go on any Nigerian hip-hop forum or blog comments discussing the best rapper in Nigeria, and Boogey’s name will come up more times than you think. For good reason. He’s right up there with the best of them, and gives the big hip-hop names a serious run for their money. When you listen well to his words it jumps out at you, and you soak every bit of it. His lyrical word play, and delivery is as good as any other out there. He might be flying under the radar this year in terms of commercial popularity, but his fans and hip-hop heads salivate anytime. His tunes Ask For It, 1am, and Salute Me give you everything you need to hear from this MC. Add that to his fan favorite, Sanctum, it’s easy to see why everyone is super excited about the prospect of this kid.

4. Jesse Jagz

Often times Jesse Jagz gets tagged with being a producer before the rapper, but that has somewhat changed with the release of the sequel to his 2013 Jagz Nation Vol 1 – Vol 2 – The Royal Niger Company. With joints Aint Nobody, Sunshine, The Case amongst others, that project is arguably one of the best released this year, complete with Jesse Jagz spitting solid bars, good music, solid productions, and giving us all something to think about while listening. I did the due diligence to read various reviews, and really I couldn’t find a bad review. As expected. Coupled with the heat his 2013 project was still carrying, it’s easy to see how Jesse Jagz is one of the hotter MCs in 2014. He might have shied away from all the showbiz lifestyle but make no mistake, Jesse is still bringing a lot of ammo in his music.

3. ModeNine

King Modo! No doubt when we speak about ModeNine, we’re speaking about the best lyricist in Nigeria, and there’s barely any competition. A legend when it comes hip-hop in Nigeria and that’s hardly an argument. That being said he’s feature here at #3 is not intended to be a slight at him at all. ModeNine dropped a whopping 40 track album, Above Ground Level, with everything you’ll need in a hip-hop album, solid joint, playful tunes, solid features including Don Jazzy, Ice Prince, Gentle, Reminisce, Praize, Ruby Gyang, Amaka, Zeus, Proverb, and the hot American MC Canibus, and overall good music. Critics have rated the album as very solid. Even if it’s not his best, it’s a good album that can only add to his great musical legacy. Tunes that stand out are Some More ft. Don Jazzy, Upside Down, SuperHuman featuring Canibus, and NTBB.

2. Phyno

Phyno said in 2013 that he was the Man Of The Year, but really we can say he’s been the Man of the Year for both 2013 and 2014. Since he burst on the scene with his unique ‘new generation igbo swag’, it’s been no slowing down this kid holding it down for the east. His pre-album singles Man Of The Year, Parcel, Ghost Mode were already putting him in a league of his own, and his album No Guts, No Glory further cemented his name as argubly the hottest rapper in Nigeria for 2014. Additional singles Alobam, Authe, and numerous features only add to the ammo for that argument. It’s hard to argue with that fact. Phyno’s unique way of flowing in Igbo while blending in English makes his tunes very appealing even to non-igbo speaking fans, and to those who actually understand Igbo it’s simply the best thing since sliced yam. He’s taken what cats like Nigga Raw, Slowdogg, and MC Loph were doing and elevated it to continental wide appeal levels.

1. Olamide

Over the past 3 years, no other rapper in Nigeria has had as much of an impact as Olamide has consistently. When you look at his body of work it’s simply outstanding how much material Olamide has put out, and in that hot material. His work ethic is unrivaled right now. His hot singles are too numerous to list but those in the past year include the likes of Yemi My Lover, Story For The Gods, Awon Goons Mi, Make Us Proud (ft. Wale), and Eleda Mi to along with his album, Baddest Guy Ever Liveth. Features? Way too much to list on here. Olamide’s street styled, gutter, and sometimes playful delivery in both Yoruba and English gives him that unique ability to appeal to fans across the spectrum. From the guys in the streets of Ibadan, to the Lagos big boys, to the Abuja babes there’s something in Olamide’s catalog for you. It’s no surprise that he’s as hot and well received as he is in Nigeria. Lyrically he might not as great as the best we’ve seen, but he more than makes up for it with solid word play, strong metaphors. A lot of which you have to understand Yoruba to really get. All in all it’s easy to see why Olamide is the hottest rapper in Nigeria for the past year.

Taxi Driver, Imeh Usuah Honoured With MFR! – “How I Found N18 Million In My Cab And Returned

What a good samaritan! Read how taxi driver returned millions of naira he found in his car….In 2012, an Abuja-based taxi driver, Mr. Imeh Usuah revealed to This Day what transpired on that fateful day: “It was one morning by 5.30 AM, in November, 2007, when British Airways, landed at the international wing of the airport in Abuja. As usual, I positioned myself from metres away from the arrival wing waiting for passengers to come out so that I can get my customers and take them where ever they want to go inside town. “In my waiting position I saw these two white men who came with the British airways. From distance I could observe that they were obviously tired from their look. They beckoned on me requesting for a drop at the Hilton Transcorp Hotel in Maitama area in Abuja. I didn’t waste time as I immediately put some of their bags into the boot of my cab and the remaining ones neatly arranged on the back seat and underneath the seats, and off I headed for the destination. I arrived at the hotel lounge within 45 minutes and dropped them with their luggage. I got paid N,4000 for my service and I zoomed off, but unknown to both of us there was a bag which contained this huge amount of money left behind tucked away underneath my seat.” On how he discovered the money, he said: “I decided to take the cab for washing as my usual practice after the day’s work, and while I was removing the foot mats in a bent down position, I saw this brown suite case tucked underneath the driver’s seat. Immediately I remembered the passengers I had carried for the day and I started thinking of who really among them could have forgotten the suitcase. Instinctively I knew it was one of the many bags belonging to those chaps I took to Transcorp Hilton. Even though I didn’t open the suitcase, I sensed at that hour that it must at least contain some valuable items. My immediate response was to inform our association chairman at that time, Mr. Alex Ekwueme Udom. I told him what happened and that I was returning the bag to the owners.” He further added that, “By the time I met these guys, the owners of the bag at the hotel, they were standing at the hotel lobby confused, dejected and frustrated. They couldn’t even recognise me as the cab driver that brought them from the airport and shockingly they didn’t know the number of taxi. But, I could recognise them. These people could not believe their eyes. Their confused state disappeared, and they were so happy that they went on their knees thanking me for returning the bag. They requested for my GSM numbers and in a twinkle of an eye, I disappeared from the scene.” Usuah didn’t know the content of the bag: “It was after sometime that the Abuja Leasing Company called our association that a report got to them of somebody who returned the sum of N18 million left in his cab. Honestly that was when I knew that the bag I returned that fateful day contained that amount of money.”

While  performing at the Beat 99.9 FM’s Triple 9 Concert last night at the Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Peter Okoye fell off the stage. The Pop duo were performing ‘Bring it on’, a song off their new album ‘Double Trouble’ when Peter Okoye apparently stepped too close tothe centre edge of the five-foot elevated stage and fell off. He tumbled and landed on the floor, hitting his back against the protective metal barricades used to shield fans from the stage. Peter also posted on his instagram page: “I fell off on stage and it wasn’t funny… Like we said” keep ur head up high and standing tall… I will surely bring it on” #sadFace #headingToTheHospital love u all!” Peter wrote on IG. Read Why Former President Olusegun Obasanjo Decided To Return To School

Former president and Nigerian Head of State, Olusegun Obasanjo has enrolled in the National Open University of Nigeria for a Master/PhD in theology and he revealed that he decided to do this to deepen his knowledge of God and serve Him better and not because he wanted to become a pastor. Speaking after completing his registration at the university’s main study centre in Lagos, Obasanjo said that by enrolling for a Ph.D, his aim is to prove that one’s position or age should not deter that person from furthering his or her educational status. “Learning should be a continuous process and if you can do it and learn without the formality of a university, all well and good. But I chose to learn and continue to learn by other means and through the discipline and the formality of the university system,” he said. Mr. Obasanjo said the other reason he decided to enrol at the institution was to showcase the opportunity NOUN provided for those intending to acquire a higher education but unable to get admission into conventional universities. He said, “I wanted to throw a bit of limelight on this institution; knowing fully well that this country at no time in the foreseeable future would be able to provide built and walled universities for all the Nigerian students who want to have higher education.” Mr Obasanjo declined to reveal his current age but he did say that age should not be hindrance to acquiring knowledge. He said, “I’ve told my children that when I have difficulty I’d tell them to come and teach me. This proves that there should be no shame in learning and any knowledge that you acquire becomes your own, nobody has to take it away from you.” The former president who has always been publicly approving of the institution previously enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in Theology at the university and graduated with “flying colours” in 2009. According to the Dean of School of Arts and Social Sciences, David Otubanjo, the number of students that enrolled at the university increased a great deal following the former president’s enrolment in 2009. The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Vincent Tenebe, said the number of enrolled students jumped from 32,000 with 16,000 of them being active students in 2010 to 308,000 enrolled students with 16,000 of them being active in 2014. He said its study centres had grown from 32 to 55 in the same period while the institution’s staff strength grew from 820 in 2010 to 25, 000 in 2014. Speaking to the Obasanjo after his enrolment, Tenebe said “Your intervention in educational development in Nigeria by resuscitating the National Open University, ensuring vigorous development of the institution, enrolling as a student and graduating with flying colours and yet today returning for a higher qualification of PHD can never be over emphasised,”

Ebola In The US: First Ebola Case Reported In Texas. Read How

The first case of Ebola diagnosed in the U.S. has been confirmed in a man who recently traveled from Liberia to Dallas, sending chills through the community as leaders urged caution to prevent spreading the virus. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden said Tuesday that the man left Liberia on Sept. 19, arrived the next day to visit relatives and started feeling ill four or five days later. Frieden said it was not clear how the man became infected. The unidentified man was critically ill and has been in isolation at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital since Sunday, federal health officials said Tuesday. They would not reveal his nationality or age. Officials said there are no other suspected cases in Texas. “I have no doubt that we’ll stop this in its tracks in the U.S. But I also have no doubt that — as long as the outbreak continues in Africa — we need to be on our guard,” Frieden said, adding that it was possible someone who has had contact with the man could develop Ebola in the coming weeks. Federal, state and local medical teams are scrambling to locate individuals who were in close contact with the patient and may have been infected. The virus is spread through direct contact with body fluids, including blood, saliva, vomit and feces. “I have no doubt that we will control this importation of Ebola so that it does not spread widely in this country,” said Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. “We will stop it here.” Henry Johnson heard the news while watching TV in the hospital’s emergency room with his wife, who was waiting to be treated for a headache. The Dallas resident said the crowded room watched closely and remained calm. But Johnson said he was worried about the people who were in the ER on Friday, as well as those who might have been exposed to Ebola after hospital staff let the patient leave. “They should have quarantined him then,” the 53-year-old chef said. “I hope they catch it before it really gets out.” Megan Castro, 27, of nearby Mesquite wasn’t aware of the Ebola patient when she arrived at the hospital with her stepson and saw news trucks parked outside. When she learned why they were there, she stopped short of the doors and scanned the building, wringing her hands as she weighed whether to go inside. “Have they cleaned the whole hospital?” she wondered aloud. The two debated whether to go to a different hospital. In the end, they decided to go in. But she said hospital officials should inform visitors and patients about what was being done to contain the disease. “The community has a right to know because there’s a lot of people who come in and out of this hospital,” said Castro, who works as a driver. Frieden said he didn’t believe anyone on the same flights as the patient was at risk. “Ebola doesn’t spread before someone gets sick and he didn’t get sick until four days after he got off the airplane,” Frieden said. Stanley Gaye, president of the Liberian Community Association of Dallas-Ft. Worth, said the 10,000-strong Liberian population in North Texas is skeptical of the CDC’s assurances because Ebola has ravaged their country. “We’ve been telling people to try to stay away from social gatherings,” Gaye said at a community meeting Tuesday evening. Large get-togethers are a prominent part of Liberian culture. “We need to know who it is so that they (family members) can all go get tested,” Gaye said. “They should let us know.” The symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting and bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure to the virus. The disease is not contagious until symptoms begin, and it takes close contact with bodily fluids to spread. Ebola is believed to have sickened more than 6,500 people in West Africa, and more than 3,000 deaths have been linked to the disease, according to the World Health Organization. But even those tolls are probably underestimates, partially because there are not enough labs to test people for Ebola. Four American aid workers who became infected in West Africa have been flown back to the U.S. for treatment after they became sick. They were treated in special isolation facilities at hospitals in Atlanta and Nebraska. Three have recovered. A U.S. doctor exposed to the virus in Sierra Leone is under observation in a similar facility at the National Institutes of Health. The U.S. has only four such isolation units, but Frieden said there was no need to move the latest patient because virtually any hospital can provide the proper care and infection control. The hospital is discussing if experimental treatments would be appropriate, Frieden said.

Happy Independence Day Nigeria @54

The history of Nigeria can be traced to prehistoric settlers living in the area as early as 11,000BC. Numerous ancient African civilizations settled in the region that is today Nigeria. An example of one of the civilizations that settles in Nigeria is the Nri Kingdom.Islam reached Nigeria through the Hausa States in the 11th century AD. TheSonghai Empire also occupied part of the region.

Nigeria was colonized byBritain in 1885, and became a British protectorate in 1901. Colonization lasted until 1960, when an independence movement succeeded in gaining Nigeria its independence. Nigeria was officially founded in October 1, 1960.

Nigeria first became a republic when it was founded, but succumbed to military rule in 1966 after a military coup. General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsitook power. A separatist movement later formed theRepublic of Biafra in 1967, leading to the three yearNigerian Civil War. Nigeria became a republic again after a new constitution was written in 1977. The republic was short lived, being overthrown by Major General Muhammadu Buhari in 1983. He was later overthrown and a new republic was founded. In 1993, the republic was dissolved again by Sani Abacha. Abacha later died in 1998 and GeneralAbdulsalami Abubakar took power. A fourth republic was later established in 1999 and military rule ended. Today, the president of Nigeria isGoodluck Johnathan, who governs a population of 168.8 million people. Nigeria is currently in the process with rebuilding Nigeria’s petroleum-based economy and fighting the Islamic militant group Boko Haram.

Today, Nigeria is exactly 54 years. On this particular day and month in 1960, the nation, acclaimed to be the ‘giant of Africa,’ got her independence from the British Colony.

On the historic day, the British Union Jack was lowered and replaced by the nation’s Green-white-green flag. Many popped champagne with the freedom from the colonial masters. And with the independence, a new constitution, establishing a federal system with an elected prime minister and a ceremonial head of state was established. From then, Nigerians took over the reins of leadership from foreigners.

Recognising the country’s particular multi-ethnic configuration or diversity, the British government had established for Nigeria a federal structure of government, with three regions. Each of the three regions had its own constitution and a good measure of autonomy while there was a fairly weak Federal Government at the centre. The three regions were the Eastern Region, Northern Region and Western Region.

It is then not surprising that since October 1, 1960, the date has remained an emotionally memorable one for the majority of Nigerians. Critical observers will today, as usual, ponder and reflect on the journey so far. Like in previous anniversaries, Nigerians will reflect on issues, concerning the economic, social and political development of the country.

For many, there is so much to thank God for, with regards to the height the nation has attained so far in the comity of nations. Those in this school of thought believe that despite the challenges facing the nation, it has not done badly in many of the indices for measuring the progress of a country. Proponents of this argument believe that for having stayed together all these years as one united country, the nation has done well.

However, there are those who argue that at 54, the nation has failed largely in meeting the expectations of the people. In the estimation of those in support of this position, virtually all the various sectors of the nation’s socio-political economy are in shambles.

In any case, many believe that irrespective of which side of the divide one belongs in the argument, the political history of the nation contributed to where she is today.

Nigeria under military rule

Nigeria’s first attempt at a democratic government was truncated on January 15, 1966, barely six years after the country got her independence. In that coup, led by five idealistic Majors of the Nigerian Army, the Prime Minister, Tafawa Balewa, and other topshots in that administration were killed.  Although, the coup plotters did not fully actualise their dream, the civilian administration did not survive the onslaught.

The then President of the Senate,  Nwafor Orizu, who was acting president, invited the military high command to take over the reins of government. Consequently, the head of the Nigeria Army, Major-General Johnson T. U. Aguiyi-lronsi became the country’s first military ruler. Within six months, he was replaced by General Yakubu Gowon in a very bloody counter-coup. Gowon was in the saddle from 1966-1975, when his regime was overthrown by General Murtala Muhammed. In 1976, his second-in-command, General Olusegun Obasanjo, became Head of State, after Muhammed was killed in a botched coup by Col. Buka Suka Dimka.

Obasanjo handed over to the civilian administration of Alhaji Shehu Shagari on October 1979.  The Shagari administration was truncated by another military coup by Major General Mohammadu Buhari on December 31, 1983, a few months after it started its second term.

General lbrahim Badamasi Babangida overthrew Buhari on August 27, 1985, and ruled the country until August 26,1993. He instituted the Interim National Government (ING) headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan.

General Sani  Abacha toppled  the ING in less than three months, after it was put in place. He ruled the country from 1993 to 1998 when he died in office.

The then Chief of Defence Staff, General Abdulsalami Abubakar replaced him. He handed to a civilian administration headed by Obasanjo on May 29, 1999, less than one year after he assumed office.

In totality, the military has ruled Nigeria for about 29 years and two months.

Nigeria under civil rule

Until 1999, civil rule in the country was very epileptic. Nigeria started off with a parliamentary system of government with Alhaji Tafawa Balewa as Prime Minister. Balewa’s tenure was cut short in the aftermath of the first coup in Nigeria.

At the return of civilian rule in 1979, Shehu Shagari was elected president, under a presidential system of government.

In 1999, Chief Obasanjo became the country’s second democratically elected  president. He spent eight years as president and handed over to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2007.

Yar’Adua died in office in 2010, before he could complete his first term in office. Consequently, his deputy, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in, as president. Jonathan completed the tenure and was elected president in the 2011 general election.

The problems

It must be noted that soon after independence, the forces of disintegration began to manifest. Between October 1960 and late 1961, charges of treasonable felony were made against leaders of the Action Group, the Yoruba ethnic-based political party, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo. In 1962, criminal proceedings against Chief Awolowo and some members of his party were concluded. They were convicted and given varying prison sentences.

With this, it was clear that the newly born Nigerian nation had begun to totter. In 1963, a national population census exercise was conducted for the country. Because of the politicisation of the exercise, even the introduction of religion into it, the entire process was regarded as unsatisfactory, and became disputed. New territories and villages and new ethnic nationalities were being discovered in certain parts of Nigeria as if such people were the pre-historical cave men. All these were in an attempt to inflate the Census figures.

In 1964, Federal Government elections were to be held, so as to elect the Prime Minister and members of the National Assembly. Again, because of intractable problems that bedeviled the election processes, the Eastern Region, one of the four Regions of Nigeria, decided to boycott the elections.

Nigeria had become four regions since Independence in 1960, following the creation of the Mid-Western Region in 1963. The crisis following the elections was eventually resolved, and in March 1965 a mini-federal election was held for the Eastern Region of Nigeria. Thereafter, the first post-independence National Assembly convened and began full legislative duties. But the tottering Nigerian nation was already developing into a political tinderbox.

In 1965, the Western Region government was in crisis and the Federal Government had to declare a state of emergency in the whole of the Western Region. This led to the appointment of Senator Dr. Moses Majekodunmi as sole administrator for the Western Region. Both the government and the Western Region House of Assembly were also dissolved.

Inevitably, the country was already sitting on kegs of gunpowder. With this, on Saturday, January 15, 1966, the political tinderbox finally exploded. A group in the Nigerian Army, led by Major Kaduna Nzeogwu struck in a bloody military coup d’état, overthrowing the government. The coup was certainly a first in the history of Nigeria.
